Hawks members honoured at FHBC Banquet

November 18 2008

Field Hockey BC held their second Volunteer Recognition Banquet on Friday November 14th at Heritage Hall. Five Hawks members were recognized for contribution to the Field Hockey Community.

Congratulations to Charlotte Hadwen, Patrick Oswald, Aaron Guest, Marg Evans and Celia Plottel.

Charlotte was awarded the Zone 5A award for Volunteer of the year in the Vancouver Zone. Charlotte has a lot of “youngest ever” accolades. Charlotte is a very devoted field hockey player, umpire and coach and has been playing, coaching and umpiring in the Vancouver Zone for over 5 years. Charlotte has just obtained her Regional rating for umpiring. She is always willing to umpire in the worst weather, at the worst times and at the fields’ farthest from her home.
She has been on a Regional team for the past 4 years and currently plays on the Hawks 1st Division team. However, her most appreciated volunteerism is through coaching. She started coaching with the Hawks Club at the U10 level and has really enjoyed the U14 level for the past two years. Charlotte has shown an aptitude for coaching. She has attended the NCCP coaching workshops and is the youngest person (in Eric Broom’s recollection) to obtain her Level 3 Theory. She is an inspiration to the young female players that she coaches. She is very responsible, organized and has inspired the players she comes into contact with to be the best that they can.

Patrick Oswald was honoured as the Manager of the year. Passion, dedication, attention to detail; these attributes would describe the vast majority, if not all, our volunteers and award winners, however, none more so than Patrick Oswald. A member of Field Hockey BC’s Executive in 2005 and 2006, Patrick has been instrumental in driving the Men’s program and making the ‘elite’ program for boys a reality. This voluntary award is presented to Patrick for his contribution in a management role to both the team BC program and to the National U21 Men’s program. Patrick has been the manager for the men’s team BC program for the last 3 years and was instrumental in coordinating and then managing the recent U21 National Men’s program.

Aaron Guest was awarded the FHBC Men's Coach of the Year Honour. Aaron Guest has become a staple of the men’s high performance coaching at Field Hockey BC.  He has coached regularly with the Junior Boys U18 and U16 Elite programs since their inception 3 years ago.  Aaron brings a simple no nonsense approach to his coaching that stresses excellence and individual accountability with all his athletes.  In 2008 Aaron Head coached the U16 Provincial Men’s team that captured the Gold medal at the FHBC Invitational tournament as well as a 3 Match USA Challenge Series win in Moorpark California over the US U17 National Squad.

Marg Evans was honoured for her past contribution to the Zone 5A women's program. Marg is now retired. She was also honoured at the the Hawks Spring Season Junior Thank You BBQ. Marg has been the Vancouver, Zone 5A representative for several years, working tirelessly for the development of women’s field hockey within Vancouver, as well as working closely with the High Performance Zone and Regional Programs. These past 2 years, Marg has offered her guidance and support for Vancouver coaches, athletes and FHBC staff in their pursuit of excellence in hockey. Today we honour her for her contributions to our community, and thank-her for her once again for her dedication to the development of the game in Vancouver.

Celia Plottel was awarded as a volunteer for the Field Hockey Community Facilites Coordinator. As Hawks Club administrator, Celia goes above and beyond in support of Field Hockey BC’s Development and High Performance Programs. She acts as a liaison for turf allocations at UBC, and has worked very hard at reallocating spring club times, so that FHBC can host Club Championships, High Performance Trials, and High Performance Championships. Celia always has the big picture of growing and promoting our sport. She should be commended for the numerous hours she dedicates to ensure our athletes and coaches reach their hockey potential.
