Hawks are committed to helping coaches and umpires learn and develop through their careers and coach support and education is an important part of this.

Mandatory Coaching Courses

This year we are asking all coaches to take 3 short safety-focused courses. Click on the courses below to register:

Safe Sport Mandatory
Making Headway Mandatory
Making Ethical Decisions Mandatory

Additionally, all coaches will be required to submit a CRC check.

Spring 2022 In-House Coach Education Sessions

On-Field Coach Training

The club will be providing all Spring League coaches with on-field coaching training.

These sessions will be anywhere from 60-120minutes long at Eric Hamber field and will educate our coaches on how to coach certain skills, how to formulate a practice plan, and how to teach a tactical plan for you team. We want to make sure our coaches are prepared for the upcoming season!

All U11-14 coaches: 10-12pm @ Eric Hamber
All U15-18 coaches: 12-2pm @ Eric Hamber

March 27

All U5-7 coaches: 9-10am Eric Hamber
All U8-10 coaches: 10-12pm Eric Hamber

Planning Your Practice

Suitable for Junior Coaches (age 13-19) and those who want to know more about how to organise and plan a session to best help your athletes develop.
Presenter: Stephanie Nesbitt
Description:
This session will discuss how to design flow to your practice that is purposeful in both it's organization and skills development.  The goal of the session will be to provide you with planning techniques for you to use to design fun, organized and athlete-centered practices.  The session will consist of a 45 minute presentation/discussion followed by a 30minute Q/A time.

Coaching Basic Field Hockey Skills

Suitable for Parent Coaches and those who want to know more about how to coach field hockey skills and techniques.
Presenter: Matt Sarmento
Description:
This session will teach parent coaches how to properly demonstrate and therefore coach basic field hockey skills to their teams. A progression for each skill will be included, which can be taught to the athletes as they progress in age/ability. In addition to skill development, this workshop will give you some session planning ideas so you may implement these skills into your training sessions. This session will consists of 30 minutes of presentation and demonstration, and 30 minutes of Q/A.

Hawks Coaching Fund

Background

Due to the unprecedented times of Covid 19 the Vancouver Hawks Board allocated a set amount of funds, $1500, to be available to the current Vancouver Hawks coaching community.

Purpose

This fund is to support the development of coaches through online courses during a time when no on-field coaching opportunities are available. The purpose of the fund is to further the development of the Vancouver Hawks current coaches and continue to provide engagement with these coaches during this time.

Objectives

  • Increase coaching qualifications of current Vancouver Hawks coaches through successful completion of certified coaching course(s).
  • Assist in retention of qualified coaches for the upcoming field hockey season by guaranteeing a commitment from 10 or more coaches.
  • Provide development opportunity to current Vancouver Hawks coaches.

Total Funds Available: $1500

Available from:  May 2020 - Sept 2020

Coach Development Fund Details:

This fund is available for Vancouver Hawks coaches that meet the below written criteria.  Individual applicants may apply only once, with a maximum of $150 available per individual.

Development Fund Application Criteria:

  1. Previously coached for the Vancouver Hawks season (Spring 2019 - Spring 2020) for a minimum of 6 weeks.

Application Process:

  1. Coaches must submit a written request to: Alex Bale, Vancouver Hawks Club Manager, manager@vancouverhawks.com
  2. The request must include:
    1. Name and division of Vancouver Hawks team coached last season
    2. Coaching course* name & cost

*Coaching course(s) must be delivered by one of the following organizations: FHBC, NCCP, VIASport, CAC, Sport for Life, and FHC.

    1. Reason for wanting to do the course
  1. An application will be approved or not approved by the Coaching Committee, consisting of Alex Bale, Stephanie Nesbitt and Matthew Sarmento
  2. Applicants who adhere to the above criteria will be reimbursed for the cost of the coaching course(s), up to $150, subject to money being available
  3. Application review will be done based on the order (date) applications are received.

Coach Commitment:

  1. Submit proof of course completion to: Alex Bale, Vancouver Hawks Club Manager, manager@vancouverhawks.com
  2. Agree to commit to coaching a Vancouver Hawks team in one of the following leagues: Junior League, Senior League, Indoor, Outdoor between September 2020 - August 2020*.

*A completion of a course with Hawks funds does not limit the coach from only working with the Vancouver Hawks.

Hawks Commitment:

  • The Vancouver Hawks will commit a maximum of $150 to any approved application.
  • Recommendations and an outline of the proper coaching pathway will be provided to help guide you through the desired process.
