Sad news.

January 04 2009

Simon Chow of the Greyhawks suffered a heart attack at Eric Hamber field on December 15 during the annual Christmas friendly match with the Jokers. He died in hospital six days later. He was 42 years of age and was one of the younger members of the team.

Simon joined the club in 1996 and played for several seasons. After a period of not playing hockey – he was at this time dedicated to tri-athlete events including various Iron Man competitions - he re-joined in 2008 and became an active member of the club. Apart from hockey, Simon was also a competitive squash player and marathoner.

Simon and his wife Linda moved to Vancouver in 1994 from England. Both trained as lawyers in England. Simon’s family had immigrated to Vancouver in the early 90’s. His mother and father and three sisters, as well as extended members of the family were tremendous support for Linda during these trying days. Linda’s parents flew from England to be with Simon at the end.

A Memorial service was held for Simon on the Saturday after Christmas. There was a very good representation from the club. Many other club members were not able to attend due to the inclement weather and being away for Christmas holidays. Simon’s passing had a profound effect on all who were at Hamber that day in December and many others beside. The Greyhawks will wear black armbands for the remainder of the season and hold a short memorial before our first VFHL game at Hamber at 3.30pm on Saturday 17th January.

We will miss Simon’s broad and engaging smile.
