The online items will be delivered at your first practice. You can also purchase field hockey equipment at several sports stores in Vancouver. Try Sports Exchange (5th and Burrard) Rackets and Runners (23rd and Oak), AKPro (57th and Main). At all these stores a discount will be given if you say you are a Hawks member.
Shoes need to be suitable for artificial turf, runners or designated turf shoes only.

Goalies

There are no goalies on the field until players are U11 for girls and U12 for boys. The Hawks Club provides goalie equipment for each team. However, some goalies own their own equipment. Goalies that own equipment receive a reduced rate of $25, to cover administration and insurance costs. Goalies with no equipment must pay full fees but will receive goalie gear for the season. All goalies are still required to register online with both the Hawks Club and FHBC.

Training and playing fields

Hawks home fields are all artificial turf. There are three: Eric Hamber Field on Oak at 35th, Point Grey Field in Kerrisdale and Wright field at UBC.  All U8/9 and 10 sessions and U11/12 girls are at Eric Hamber Field. For all other age groups week day trainings and week-end home games will be held at one of these three locations.  The Vancouver Junior League is based on a home and away schedule. Travel is required for league games for female players U13 and older and male players from U11 and older. Carpooling is recommended.

Extras and Fun Stuff.

The Hawks Club wants to update the U10 t-shirts. All girls’ shirts have daisies on the back and all boys’ shirts have lightening bolts. It’s time for an update and we want the athletes to design it! All artists, playing in the U8/9 or 10 age groups should submit a drawing for consideration as the new back of the shirt logo. There will be one girl’s winner and one boy’s winner. If your drawing is chosen you will be given free Hawks Club registration. Send your drawings to the Hawks office listed at the top of this newsletter. You may enter more than one drawing but make sure you send your name with the drawing.

The Men’s National Team qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. There are 4 current or past Hawks members on the Men’s National team. The Women’s team is hosting an Olympic Qualifier in from April 26th – May 4th in Victoria. The team is hoping to qualify to go to the Olympics at this tournament. There are 3 current or past Hawks members on the Women’s National team.

Want to see how to hit a ball, what a shave tackle is, what a punch hit is? Check out the Field Hockey BC web site under “Coaching”, then click “resources” then scroll down to “tactical”. There are some great photos and videos of two Hawks National team members showing how the skills should be done.

If you would like to place a stack of Hawks brochures at your school, community centre or church, or hand out to friends, teammates or relatives please contact the Hawks office and arrangements will be made to get them to you.
