Game Rules

Aim

These rules are intended as a starting point and a basic guideline for the u8-10 games. As the season progresses, coaches may feel the need to adapt or expand some rules in order to ensure the game flows as it is intended to or to ensure the safety of the players ie to avoid overcrowding on a free push.   Please feel free to suggest changes in collaboration with the other coaches in your age group.

Team sizes

The whole team trains together for the first part of the session and then splits into 2 sub teams in order to play games against another team.

Try to keep the number of players on the field per team number no higher than 5 players at a time.  The aim at this level is for each player to have maximum time on the field and maximum opportunity to touch the ball.  It is preferable to play two smaller games of 4 on 4 rather than one bigger game of  8 on 8.

Attempt to give all players equal playing time on field.  Interchange players frequently.

Game time

There is 75 mins time available in the session.  The first 45 mins is for warm up and skill development.  That leaves 25 mins available for game time.  This would give 2 x 10 min halves with a short break in between.

Field

Use at least 1/8 of soccer field to set up your game – use cones to mark goals and marked lines as end lines or side lines.  Ensure there is a safety zone (no play area) between your game and the game next to you.  Have all games running same way ie across field.

Umpires

During games coaches need to adopt a dual role as coach/umpire by umpiring from the middle of the field and calling plays and players into positions for both teams.

General rules

  • All players must wear shinguards and mouthguards. No Guards no play.
  • To begin the game and to restart after a goal all players must be in their defensive half off the field.
  • The game begins with a push back from center
  • No designated goalkeepers.  There is no protective gear provided for goalkeepers in these age groups.  Therefore players must not be allowed to  play in a goalkeeping position/role.
  • The ball cannot be played by a player kneeling or lying down.
  • Players cannot stop a shot on goal or make a tackle by going to the ground on their knees.
  • The ball can only be hit with the flat side of the stick.
  • No hitting, the emphasis is on pushing,  Slap hitting is OK.
  • The ball cannot be played with the feet, the hand or any part of the body.
  • No first-time hitting.  Ie a ball must be stopped before being hit/pushed.
  • Sticks should be kept well below shoulder height at all times. Sticks cannot be used to hit other players and should not be swung dangerously.  Note:  A stick does not have to be above shoulder height to be considered dangerous.
  • No body checking.
  • No stick checking at any time. When tackling a player with the ball.  The tackle must be made on the ball.
  • The ball may not be raised or lifted at any time.
  • There is no off-side rule in field hockey.
  • A goal is scored by dribbling or pushing the ball into the goals (between 2 cones).  There is no designated goal circle and no penalty corners.
  • No obstruction. A player may not use his stick or body to prevent another player from playing the ball.
  • A free Push.  When an infringement occurs a free push is taken on the spot where the infringement occurred.  The defending team players must be 5 yards away from the free push.  Encourage players to push the ball or slap hit the ball rather that hit it.
  • Balls that go off the side of the field are awarded as a push-in to the opposing team.
  • To avoid having all players playing on the ball and to encourage players to hold a position, you may like to introduce zones on your field to restrict players to certain areas and avoid over crowding.
  • No flat stick tackles or traps.  For better skill development and for safety teach upright trapping and tackling at the U10 level.
